Vintage Batik Sale & Repurpose Contest at FabMo
About Our Vintage Batik Sale & Repurpose Contest at FabMo
After 13 years of making a living selling our batik designs at art and craft fairs throughout the SF Bay Area, we stopped creating our batiks in 1985, but continued selling Rick’s fine-wood inlay jewelry boxes and Alice’s hand-dyed silk clothing and accessories for 10 more years. Many of the leftover batiks were sold at our store, Shady Lane, until our selection wasn't the best . We saved the remaining batiks (over 2,000 pieces) in our storage for 30 years.
We have donated most of the remaining batiks to FabMo, the wonderful nonprofit organization that saves designer fabric from the landfill, for wearing as is, upcycling and repurposing. It is an amazing vintage collection of odd sizes and materials (including hospital gowns, pillow cases, sheets, basically whatever natural fabric we experimented with), all pre-shrunk and color-fast, ready for new eyes to see the creative possibilities. The selection has been picked over, and there is some overstock of certain sizes and styles, irregular items, and flawed batiks, but that is the challenge of the contest we are sponsoring. We are asking creative buyers to design wonderful, new creations with the materials: adult and children’s clothing, fashion accessories, gift items, you name it!
Please enter our contest, and a group of us will judge the creations and offer Shady Lane gift certificates as prizes for the top three design winners: $200 for first place, $100 for second place, and $75 for third place. Every entrant will also receive gifts from Shady Lane just for entering our contest. The special "donation sale" of our batiks will be held on Saturday, May 21, 10 am to 2 pm at FabMo, 970 Terra Bella Ave. Mt. View, and the deadline for entering our contest will be June 12 the winners will be announced at FabMo on June 25 where the contestants’ creations will be displayed.
